LEESBURG, Fla. – Macalester College closed out play at THE Spring Games with a doubleheader split Friday morning at Sleepy Hollow. Macalester, which went 5-5 in Florida, lost to NYU, 4-3 and beat Sewanee, 19-2 to improve to 9-5 on the season.
Against NYU, Macalester went into the top of the seventh inning trailing 3-0. The Scots loaded the bases with one out on singles by first year
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore), junior
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) and sophomore
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont). Carpenter came home on a grounder by junior
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine), and senior
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley)plated both Gunther and O'Connor with a single to tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh, NYU scored the game-winning run when Honor Sankey came home from third on a steal attempt by Marisa Bella.
Sophomore pitcher
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) limited NYU to three runs on six hits over four innings. Bean led the offense with two hits.
Macalester used a huge fourth inning to run away from Sewanee in the day's second game. Leading 3-1 heading into the fourth, the Scots piled up 13 hits and scored 16 runs with 20 at-bats in the inning. Caicedo was 3-for-3 with a single, two doubles and two RBIs. Emma Hartmann (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) each had two-run doubles, and Gunther had two hits and two RBIs. For the game, Carpenter was 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs and four RBIs.
Migacz earned the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three in four innings of work.
Macalester returns to action on Mar. 25 against Martin Luther College. The non-league doubleheader starts at 4:00 p.m. in the Irish Sports Dome in Rosemount, Minn.
