LEESBURG, Fla. – The Macalester College softball team continued play at THE Spring Games, defeating Norwich University 8-1 before falling to Trinity College, 4-2 Tuesday afternoon at Sleepy Hollow. The Scots are now 6-4 on the season.
In the win over Norwich (0-4), Macalester used RBI singles from junior
Natalie Platt (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) and senior
Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Then in the second, sophomore
Sophie Migacz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) plated first year
Elena Youngdale (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Paul Academy) with a single. Still in the second, the Scots loaded the bases for Platt, who drew a walk to make the score 4-0. Junior
Morghan Bean (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) followed with a grand slam home run, her first homer of the season, to give Macalester a commanding 8-0 advantage.
The Scots' pitching did the rest, holding Norwich without a hit until the bottom of the seventh. Norwich scored its lone run in the fifth on a couple walks and an error to extend the game. Migacz started and pitched three hitless innings, allowing only a walk. Bean finished up, surrendering one hit and an unearned run while walking four and striking out two in four innings of work. First year
Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Against Trinity (5-1), Macalester erased an early 1-0 deficit when junior
G.G. Gunther (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) singled home Carpenter in the bottom of the first. The Bantams scored a run in the top of the second, then received a two-run double from Michelle Treglia in the top of the fourth to lead 4-1. The Scots pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth on a bunt by Carpenter that plated sophomore
Claire O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont). Later in the inning, Macalester loaded the bases with two out, but a popup ended the inning and the threat.
Carpenter was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Migacz went the distance, giving up four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three in seven innings.
Macalester resumes play at THE Spring Games on Thursday, Mar. 16 against UW-Stevens Point and RIT. Both contests will be played at Sleepy Hollow in Leesburg, Fla.
