TUCSON, Ariz. - The Macalester College baseball team continued play at the Tucson Invitational with a 7-3 loss to Marian University Sunday night at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The defeat drops the Scots to 5-2 on the season, while the Sabres improve to 3-2.
Macalester scored twice in the top of the first inning, with junior
Nick McMullen (Payson, Ariz./Payson) singling home sophomore
Jared Abelson (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) and later scoring from third on a stolen base by junior
Collin Brantner (Farmington, Conn./Kingswood Oxford). After Marian answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the score, senior
Peter Bertel (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) came home on a wild pitch in the second for a 3-2 lead.
Marian gained the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs on five walks and no hits. Two more runs in the third and another in the fourth made the score 7-3. Macalester put runners in scoring position three times over the final five innings but was unable to generate a run the rest of the way.
Abelson finished with two hits to lead the offense. Senior pitcher
Doug Lewis (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) tossed two scoreless innings of relief while striking out three batters. Senior
Sam Thomas (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) also blanked the Sabres over one inning.
The Scots will face Salem State University on Monday, Mar. 13 at the Tucson Invitational. The game starts at 4:00 p.m. Pacific at Kino Sports Complex.
