Men’s Soccer: Macalester Beats Gustavus in MIAC Semifinals, 1-0

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team went on the road and defeated second-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College, 1-0 in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs Wednesday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field. The win advances the third-seeded Scots (12-5-2) to the MIAC championship game for the second year in a row.

This year's MIAC finals is a rematch of the 2016 championship game that saw St. Thomas edge the Scots, 1-0. The game will be played at St. Thomas' South Field on Saturday, Nov. 4, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The game's only goal came on an attack that began on the right side. Senior midfielder Max Abramson (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) sent a pass down the line to first year forward Floyd Krom (Naaldwijk, Netherlands/UWC-Costa Rica), who centered the ball into the penalty area to junior midfielder Seth Kofman (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo). Kofman made no mistake, beating Gustavus goalkeeper Matt Bateman to his left for a 1-0 lead.

The Scots' defense was solid, allowing just one shot on goal for the game. Junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) made the one save to earn his eighth shutout of the season. Bateman finished with six saves, as Macalester outshot the Gusties, 10-6 for the game.

Saturday's game at No. 5 St. Thomas will be the Scots' sixth trip to the MIAC finals since the league began using a playoff system in 2003. Macalester won the 2009 MIAC Playoffs by defeating Carleton. The winner of the MIAC Playoffs receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
