Men’s Soccer: No. 18 Macalester Ties Luther in Regional Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The 18th-ranked Macalester College men's soccer team played Luther College to a scoreless tie in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The result is the final non-league game for the Scots, who are now 9-3-2 on the season. The Norse move to 8-4-3.

Macalester's best scoring chances came near the end of the second half. On a corner kick by senior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's), senior midfielder Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) headed a shot that hit the crossbar. Off the rebound, sophomore midfielder Nick Moore (Georgetown, Mass./Governor's Academy) fired a shot that was saved off the line by a Luther defender. A few minutes later, Zach Moore headed another Burke corner kick that was saved by Norse goalkeeper Carson Davenport.

The Scots held a 16-9 advantage in shots taken, as Davenport recorded three saves for Luther. Junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) notched his fifth shutout of the season, making one save. The result came against a Luther team that is ranked sixth in the latest North Region rankings.

Before the game, the team honored its 12 seniors and their family and friends as a part of Senior Day.

Macalester returns to MIAC action on Friday, Oct. 20 with a game at Saint Mary's University, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
