Men’s Soccer: Big First Half Powers No. 18 Macalester Past Augsburg, 3-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College men's soccer team defeated Augsburg University, 3-0 in a MIAC contest Wednesday night at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, ranked 18th nationally, improve to 8-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Auggies fall to 6-6-1, 2-3-1 MIAC.

Macalester scored all three of its goals in the first half. Senior defender Robert Tomecek (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) started the scoring in the sixth minute, lifting a shot over goalkeeper Clark Page and into the net for his first career goal in 68 games at Macalester. Then in the 20th minute, senior forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) headed a cross from senior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) through the hands of Page and into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Another defender, sophomore Max Kent (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Louis Park), made it 3-0 in the 39th minute. Kent volleyed home a corner kick from senior midfielder Max Abramson (Del Mar, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) to close out the scoring.

Augsburg took 11 shots compared to nine for the Scots, but junior goalkeeper Colton Wenig (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) was required to make just two saves for the shutout. Wenig now has four shutouts on the season. Page had one save in the first half, with Tommy Molski playing the second half and recording a save.

Macalester plays another MIAC game on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Bethel University. The game starts at 1:00 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minn.
