Men’s Soccer: Baumann Lifts No. 20 Macalester Past Wartburg, 3-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior forward Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) scored a pair of goals to help the Macalester College men's soccer team defeat Wartburg, 3-1 in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, ranked 20th nationally, improve to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-1.

In the 19th minute, junior midfielder Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) sent a pass into the penalty area to Baumann from the right side. Baumann collected the pass and scored from seven yards out for a 1-0 lead. A minute, 13 seconds after halftime, the Knights pulled even when a Wartburg player was fouled in the Scots' penalty area. Garrett Grimsman converted the ensuing penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1.

Baumann struck again for Macalester eight minutes later, receiving a pass up the middle from senior midfielder Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) and beating Knights' goalkeeper Paul Koebke Barsic for a 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Seth Kofman (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) earned his first career point when his corner kick was knocked in by junior midfielder Zach Moore (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) in the 73rd minute. Wartburg played with 10 players for all but six minutes following a red card given for a hard foul.

Senior goalkeeper Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) recorded three saves in goal for the Scots. Barsic had one save for the Knights.

Macalester returns to action this weekend at the ACM Tournament, hosted by Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill. The Scots face the host Foresters on Friday, Sept. 9 at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Lawrence University on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
