NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester men's basketball team dropped a MIAC contest to St. Olaf College, 75-62 on the road Monday night in the Skoglund Center. The Scots are now 3-19 overall and 1-16 in the conference, while the Oles improve to 14-8, 12-5 MIAC.
St. Olaf never trailed, leading by as many as 15 points in the first half en route to a 34-22 halftime advantage. The Oles shot 41.2 percent from the field while holding the Scots to 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) from the floor. The lead grew to as many as 18 points in the second half, as the hosts led 58-40 with 5:19 to play. A 10-2 run, capped by a three from first year guard
Carl Salvino (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt), brought Macalester to within 10, 60-50 with 3:12 remaining. But the Scots were unable to get any closer, as the Oles wrapped up the season sweep with the Scots to take sole possession of second place in the MIAC standings.
Salvino was 5-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, en route to a career-high 12 points in 15 minutes off the bench. First year guard
Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) led Macalester with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, while junior center
Kareem Ismail (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) added 11 points and three assists. Junior guard
Jordan Black-Matthews (Dallas, Tex./Covenant Christian) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. St. Olaf was led by Ben Figini with 22 points and Riley Aeikens with 17 points.
Macalester hosts another MIAC game when Augsburg visits the Leonard Center on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
