ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior guard
Lauren Clamage (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Acad.) scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Macalester College women's basketball team to a 102-83 victory over Bethany Lutheran College Friday night in the Leonard Center. The Scots close out 2016 with a 7-4 record on the season, while the Vikings fall to 4-7.
Macalester opened the game with a 14-7 run, only to have Bethany Lutheran reel off nine straight points to lead, 16-14 late in the first quarter. A three-pointer by first year guard
Holly Hull (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) helped the Scots take a 21-20 edge at the end of one quarter. Macalester maintained the upper hand into the second quarter, getting a pair of threes and 13 points from Clamage in building a 43-34 lead by halftime. The Scots shot 48.6 percent from the field in the first half, with Clamage scoring 15 points and junior center
Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont./Helena) scoring 14 points.
In the third quarter, a 14-3 run helped Macalester push its lead to 20, 64-44, with Clamage burying two more three-pointers in the run. The Vikings did not go away, as the visitors put together a 30-15 spree that brought them within five, 79-74 with 5:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Scots answered by outscoring Bethany Lutheran, 23-9 the rest of the way to earn the victory. Junior guard
Vivi Gregorich (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) tallied 11 points and Clamage had nine points in the final five minutes of the game.
The Scots ended up shooting 66.7 percent from the field in the second half and 56.5 percent for the game while out-rebounding the Vikings, 44-31. Clamage hit five threes and was 10-of-16 overall from the field en route to 30 points. Fruh notched her fourth double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks and two steals. Gregorich was the third Scot to eclipse 20 points with 21 points, three boards and three assists, while Hull added 12 points, three assists and two blocks. Junior forward
Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif./Branson School) grabbed 11 rebounds to go with six points and five assists.
Haley Sandin and Minnie Frederick paced the Vikings with 25 and 23 points, respectively.
Macalester resumes MIAC play with a game at Saint Mary's University on Wednesday, Jan. 4, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Winona, Minn.
