ST. PAUL, Minn. – Needing a win to qualify for the MIAC playoffs, the Macalester College women's soccer team came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Bethel University Saturday evening at Macalester Stadium. The Scots' season comes to an end with a 9-5-3 record overall, including a 4-5-1 mark in the conference. The Royals (13-4-1, 8-3 MIAC) tie Augsburg for second and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's MIAC playoffs.
Bethel scored the only goal it would need in the 36th minute, when Maggie Sipe headed home a cross from Sydney Wright for her 10th goal of the season. The Scots, who had outshot the Royals, 8-4 up to that point, put two of their four second-half shots on goal, but were unable to get on the scoreboard.
Junior goalkeeper
Emma Toomer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) registered five saves for Macalester, while Dylan Melby made seven saves for the shutout.
Before the game, the Scots honored their five seniors: midfielder
Rae Hohle (Aurora, Ill./Illinois Math & Science), forward
Kara Komoto (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake), defender
Michaela McGonigle (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names), midfielder
Pia Mingkwan (Albany, Calif./Albany) and midfielder
Natalie Prescott (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah).
