COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The third overtime game-winner of the season for junior midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck St. Mary's) gave the Macalester College men's soccer team a 3-2 victory at Saint John's University Tuesday afternoon at Haws Field. The MIAC win leaves the Scots with an overall record of 11-3-3, including a 5-2-2 mark in the conference. The Johnnies fall to 5-8-3, 4-4-1 MIAC.
Macalester broke a scoreless tie in the 44th minute, when a Saint John's defender committed a foul in the penalty area. Senior midfielder
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) tucked the ensuing penalty kick inside the right post to put the Scots on top, 1-0. The Johnnies answered early in the second half, as Uriel Cordoba found the net in the 57th minute.
The game didn't stay tied for long, as sophomore midfielder
Jamel Benhamida (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) blasted a shot from the left into the upper right corner of the goal less than two minutes later. However, Saint John's responded again with a goal by Zack Boerjan in the 61st minute to knot the score at 2-2.
Just 1:48 into the first overtime period, junior forward
Ionatan Kuperwajs (Redmond, Wash./Woodinville) took a shot that was blocked by a Johnnies' defender and bounced to Burke, who beat goalkeeper Nicholas French from about eight yards out. Earlier this season, Burke scored overtime game-winners against UW-Superior on Sept. 1 and at Gustavus on Sept. 14. He now has four goals and four assists for 12 points on the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) recorded eight saves for the Scots, while French finished with five saves for the Johnnies. The teams combined to take 44 shots, with the Scots holding a 23-21 edge.
Macalester closes out the regular-season with a home MIAC game against Bethel on Friday, Oct. 28. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
