Former Macalester Football Coach Tom Hosier Passes Away

498Tom Hosier, who coached the Macalester football team for 11 seasons during the 1980s, passed away on Wednesday, October 28 in Rochester, Minn. Tom coached the Scots to the victory that ended the program's long losing streak in the first game of his second season as head coach. He was inducted into the Macalester Hall of Fame in 2007.

A native of South Haven, Michigan and a graduate of DePauw University, Tom came to Macalester in 1979 after a successful stint as the head coach at Eureka College. After his 1980 squad ended the streak, Tom led the Scots to four consecutive winning seasons from 1983 to 1986. The 1986 team went 7-2-1 to tie for second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and also set a NCAA record by forcing 58 turnovers. Tom chronicled the challenges and triumphs of his time at Macalester in his book, Mac is Back.

Tom left Macalester in 1989 and continued his coaching career at Winona State, where he won a conference championship in 1993. Along with being a Macalester Hall of Famer, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at South Haven High School, Bemidji State, Eureka and Winona State.

"Coach Hosier was not just a tremendous football coach but an amazing leader," current Macalester football coach Tony Jennison said. "The amount of pride his players had in playing for him and what they accomplished is what really stands out to me. What he did at Macalester in terms of building a football program may be one of the better stories in all of college football."
