Women’s Soccer: Macalester Upended by Concordia in MIAC Quarterfinals, 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's soccer team fell to Concordia College, 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Macalester Stadium. The Scots, seeded third in the tournament, drop to 10-3-4 on the season with their first loss in 12 games. The sixth-seeded Cobbers improve to 12-7 and advance to Wednesday's semifinals.

Concordia's Emily Wendorff scored what would prove to be the game's only goal in the 21st minute. Wendorff dribbled through a group of Macalester defenders, spun free and placed a shot just inside the left post for a 1-0 lead. The Scots dominated in the second half, taking 11 shots after halftime.

With less than eight minutes remaining, Macalester put two shots off the crossbar, as a long shot by senior midfielder Lydia Chodosh (Los Angeles, Calif./Culver City) went over goalkeeper Elizabeth Bitzen but caromed off the underside of the crossbar. Then off a corner kick, a header by sophomore defender Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) also hit the crossbar and stayed out of the goal, keeping the Scots off the scoreboard. The loss, which ended a six-game winning streak, is the first for Macalester since a 3-1 decision at Wartburg on Sept. 23.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Wilson-King (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prep) recorded one save, as Macalester outshot Concordia, 12-6. Wendorff also finished with one save for the Cobbers.
