Men’s Basketball: Macalester Earns 71-53 Victory over Crown

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester men's basketball team won a non-conference game against visiting Crown College, 71-53 Friday evening in the Leonard Center. The victory is the second in a row for the Scots, who are now 2-2. The Storm falls to 0-2 on the season.

Macalester took control of the game from the start, opening with a 17-2 run capped by a pair of threes from first year guard Dean Shoham (Encino, Calif./Viewpoint). Crown responded with a 13-2 spree of its own to get back in the game, 19-15 with 7:35 left in the first half. But two three-pointers from senior guard Kyle Bernhard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Dundee-Crown) and another by first year guard Michael Gutierrez (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Prep Academy) helped the Scots out-score the Storm 23-6 the rest of the period to take a 42-21 halftime lead.

Macalester maintained the upper hand throughout the second half, leading by as many as 25 points. The Scots ended up shooting 45.6 percent from the field, including 10-of-16 (.625) from three-point range, while holding Crown to 31.3 percent shooting. Macalester also earned a 47-34 advantage on the glass.

Gutierrez led all players with 16 points to go with five assists and two steals. First year forward Wyatt Ferm (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) added 11 points, five assists and two steals, while sophomore forward Will Lutz (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Scots. James Brown and Josh Volness each had 11 points to pace Crown.

Macalester hosts Northwestern in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 24, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center.
