Augsburg achieved its only lead of the second half, hitting a jumper with just :14 to play, and held on to defeat Macalester 55-54 Saturday at the Leonard Center in St. Paul.
Always trailing from the middle of the opening half until the closing seconds, pulled to within a single point at 52-51 before Macalester stretched its advantage to 54-51 on a
Kathryn Medinger (Sr., Sitka, Alaska) basket with 1:28 left. However, Augsburg's Jill Tichy scored with 1:17 to go to get her team within a single point. Tichy then netted the game-winning basketball with only :14 remaining.
Medinger scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead the way for Mac.
Erin Murray (So., Sparta, Wis.) finished with 12 points and
Veronika Jakubovie (Sr., Maple Grove, Wis.) registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards to go along with three blocks.
Augsburg, which led 12-5 in second chance points, was led by Tichy with 21 points and Marie Fitzgerald with 16.
The Auggies are now 10-10 overall and 7-10 in MIAC play. Macalester is 3-18 overall, 2-16 in the MIAC.
The Scots are off until next Wednesday (Feb. 12) when they take on St. Benedict in St. Joseph.
