ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Northwestern dominated in the paint offensively, outscoring Maclester 30-6 in the lane, and the Macalester was unable to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit in a 68-56 loss to the Eagles.
The Scots also were hurt by their 12 turnovers as Northwestern converted them into 18 points while the hosts forced just six turnovers and got four points as a result.
Macalester opened the second half on a 15-7 run, closing to within four points of the Eagles at when
Phil Levine-Caleb's short jumper from the lane made the score 39-35 with 11 minutes 40 seconds to play, but Northwestern answered with an 11-0 run to take a 15-point lead, its largest of the game and the Scots never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Bert Yaffe turned in a solid all-around performance in lead Macalester, scoring eight points while grabbing nine rebounds. He also had three assists, blocked a shot and recorded a steal in 24 minutes of action.
Kareem Ismail led the Scots with 11 points, getting nine at the free throw line, where he went 9-for-12, while
Dylan Kilgour added nine points and both
Kyle Bernhard and Levine-Caleb contributed nine points each off the bench.
The Scots are idle over Thanksgiving weekend before returning to action with their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at home versus St. Olaf, Dec. 3, at 7:45 p.m.
