Johnnies shoot 63% from long-range to beat Scots

St. John's knocked down 17 of its 27 shots from outside the three-point arc for a 63% mark and went on to beat Macalester 85-64 Wednesday night at the Leonard Center.  The Johnnies, who lost just five turnovers, win their fifth in a row.

The game's first 15 minutes were closely played, with the Scots holding a lead for much of the way.  Macalester's led 27-23 with 5:37 remaining in the opening half before St. John's rallied with 11 unanswered point to go up 34-27 with just under three minutes left.  SJU led 43-35 at the break despite a 52% shooting figure for the home team.

St. John's knocked down eight of their 10 three-point tries in the second half to pull away.  On the night, the Johnnies received 38 points from their bench.

Macalester led 11-4 in second chance points and was 21-for-23 from the free throw stripe for a 91% mark.  The Scots were led led by Sam Marshall (Sr., Prairie, Wis.) with 23 points and three assists.  Dylan Kilgour (Fy., La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 8-for-8 from the foul line, finishing with 17 points.  Justin Wasik (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Maine South) contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Alex Schmitt led the St. John's long-range attack with 19 points on a 5-for-6 three-point shooting effort.  Mitchell Kuck and Seth Marx each scored 14.  The Johnnies are 8-10 overall and 7-6 in the MIAC.

The Scots, 4-13 on the season and 1-11 in MIAC play, travel to Northfield Saturday (Jan. 26) to take on St. Olaf.
