Macalester's bid for a second straight MIAC win, and a victory over the Knights for the second year in a row, was denied by Carleton, which pulled away to win 63-56 in Northfield. The Scots led for nearly the entire time over the game's first 30 minutes, and were down by a single point at 51-50 with 6:10 to play before Carleton went on an 8-1 run to force Mac to foul down the stretch.
Carleton is 8-5 on the season and 5-3 in the MIAC. Macalester is 4-9 overall, 1-7 in the MIAC.
Macalester struck quickly and led 20-7 at the 12:42 mark of the opening period. The Scots led 26-26 with 8:38 to go and were on top 34-30 at halftime. The Knights took the lead for good with 11:20 left in the second half.
Three Scots scored in double digits on the day.
Sam Marshall (Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) just came short of a second straight double-double, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists to lead the way.
Dylan Kilgour (Fy., La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) hit three from long range and finished with 12 points, while
Bert Yaffe (So., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) came off the bench to score 10.
Carleton was led by Scott Theisen with 19 points, seven boards and five assists. Tom Sawatzke produced 15 points. Head coach Guy Kalland collects his 400th career win at the Northfield school.
Macalester plays host to Augsburg Monday (Jan. 14) at the Leonard Center at 7:30 p.m.
