Gustavus Adolphus kept its one-game hold on first place in the MIAC standings, jumping out to an 11-2 advantage and leading the entire way in a 68-52 victory over Macalester in St. Peter.
Macalester crashed the boards for a 16-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, but could not overcome a 51% Gustavus shooting performance on the day.
Bert Yaffe (Fy., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) came off the bench to go 4-for-4 on three-point shots and sparking the Scots with 14 points to go along with six rebounds.
Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area), who came into the game as the MIAC's third-leading scorer, finished with 16 points to pace the Scots for the 15th time this season. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) nearly had a double-double, contributing 10 points and nine boards.
Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan), ranked fourth in the MIAC in assists, handed out four helpers.
The Gusties, who led 39-25 at halftime, had a balanced attack, led by MIAC scoring leader Seth Anderson with 12 points. Tyler Grey and Ben Biewen each scored 10. Adam Michel had eight points, four assists, four steals and six rebounds. Gustavus leads St. Thomas by a game on top of the MIAC standings and is 1 ½ games ahead of St. Olaf.
Macalester has two games remaining on the season, both at home. The Scots play host to St. John's Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 7:30 p.m. and take on Hamline Saturday (Feb. 18) in the finale at 3 p.m. Both Mac opponents are battling to get into the MIAC playoffs.
