Macalester claims second straight MIAC win

Macalester closed out the first half on a 19-4 run, turning a 12-5 deficit into an eight-point halftime lead, and went on to topple host-St. Catherine 50-45.   The Scots held the Wildcats to a 28% shooting figure on the game.

The Scots win their seventh straight in the series and go to 3-3 overall, 2-1 in the MIAC.  St. Kate's drops to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.  Macalester knocked down 4-of-9 three-point shots over the opening 20 minutes and led 24-16 at halftime.

Kyanna Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) put together another solid all-around game, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead the Scots to their second straight MIAC win.  Coming off a career-best 23-point effort two days ago in a win over St. Olaf, Taylor Pike (Jr., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) led Macalester with 13 points. 

Veronika Jakubovie (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) blocked four shots. Abby Purfeerst (Fy., River Falls, Wis.) contributed eight points and Carmen Whitehead (Jr., Greeley, Colo. / West) scored seven.

St. Catherine was led by Paige Marquez with 12 points and Sarah Mong with 10.  Mong also had eight rebonds and four assists.  The Wildcats hustled for 22 offensive rebounds.

The Scots go for their third straight MIAC win when they host St. Benedict Wednesday (Jan. 5) at 7:30 p.m.
