St. Thomas closed out the game on a 7-2 run to hold off the visiting Scots 51-46 and avoid its first MIAC setback of the season.
Macalester played an outstanding game, especially on the defensive end, and was tied at 44-44 with 3:56 left on the second half clock. The upset was not to be, however, as
D3Hoops.com No. 15-ranked UST moves on to 18-1 on the season and a perfect 16-0 in the MIAC. The Scots drop to 8-11 overall, 6-10 in the MIAC.
Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) helped lead the Macalester effort, making half of her 10 shots and finishing with 13 points, five assists, four rebounds and a couple steals.
Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) joined Wood in double figures, scoring 15 points. Collected seven boards apiece were
Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) and
Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.). Schiedermayer scored nine points and Jones had eight.
The Tommies were led by Taylor Young with 16 points and five assists. Sarah Smith scored 14 points. St. Thomas extends its winning streak to 18 games and holds its two-game lead over Gustavus for the MIAC crown.
After playing four of their past five games on the road, the Scots return to their home court Wednesday (Feb. 1) when they host Carleton at 7:30 p.m.
