Macalester and St. John's played a closely-contested game for most of the first half, but the host-Johnnies closed out the period with a 6-1 run to go up by nine points at the break, and stretched out their lead in the second half to win 68-50 in Collegeville.
The Scots shot 58% in the second half, but could not cut into the SJU lead. The game was statistically closer than the final score. St. John's led in field goal accuracy (47% to 43%), had a slight 11-8 turnover advantage, and had an 11-7 lead in offensive rebounds.
Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) led Macalester with his first double-double of the season. Marshall went 7-for-13 from the floor and finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Johnnies did a good job defensively against the red-hot
Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area), who was held to 11 points.
Justin Wasik (So., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) knocked down a pair of threes and finished with 10 points. Peters and
Andrew Matsumoto (Jr., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) each handed out three assists.
Aaron Barmore pumped in 27 points to pace St. John's, while Andy Burns and Chris Neumann each added 12 points. Neumann jumped for nine rebounds and dished out six assists. The Johnnies go to 9-4 on the season and 5-4 in the MIAC. They shot 59% in the second half to match Mac's shooting.
St. John's avenges a 90-81 defeat to the Scots last winter in Collegeville.
The Scots, 1-13 overall and 1-8 in the MIAC, make the trip to Moorhead on Wednesday (Jan. 18) to play Concordia.
