Macalester put together a big opening half, scoring the game's first nine points and staging a 22-6 run later in the period, and held off host-St. Catherine 79-62. Although the Scots led 37-17 at one point, they had to recover from a 15-1 Wildcat rally to open the second half as SMU got to within one point. Macalester regained control after its sluggish second half start, and eventually pulled away to win by 17.
Mac gains the season sweep over the Wildcats and improves to 5-7 on the season, 3-6 in MIAC play. The Scots shot 65% in the first half and led 46-31 at the break.
Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) posted a double-double to lead the Scots, finishing with 22 points and 12 rebounds while going 8-for-13 from the field.
She was joined by three teammates in double figures in scoring.
Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) scored 15 points,
Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) had 14 points to go along with five assists, and
Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) contributed 11 points. Jones made five of her seven shots from the floor.
The Scots, who have won six straight in the series with SCU, compiled a big 24-9 turnover advantage, getting four steals from Wood, and three apiece from Jones,
Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) (who also had four assists) and
Carmen Whitehead (So., Greeley, Colo. / West).
Sarina Baker knocked down four three-pointers and led St. Kate's with 27 points. The Wildcats slide to 1-11 on the season and 0-9 in the conference.
Next up for the Scots is a game Saturday (Jan. 14) at Gustavus Adolphus.
