Scots fall late at Augsburg despite hot start by Hamblett

Augsburg's Matthew Quammen drilled a three-pointer from the corner with :11 to play to break a tie and lead the Auggies past Macalester 69-65 in Minneapolis. The Scots led for most of the first half and the second period was closely contested throughout. There were eight lead changes and nine ties in this MIAC thriller.

Kyle Hamblett (Sr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) came out on fire, making his first eight shots - including four three-pointers - for 20 points, as Macalester jumped out 32-21 with six minutes to go in the opening period. At this point of the contest, the quick-striking Scots were 13-for-17 from the field (76%). Hamblett finished with 24 points, matching a career-best. Macalester led 40-34 at the break by shooting 56%.

The second half was very tight throughout. Mac's Pierce Peters (So., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) knocked down a corner three with under two minutes to go to put Macalester on top 65-63, but three straight turnovers combined with a pair of Quammen free throws and the late Quammen game-winner allowed Augsburg to stay alive in the race for an MIAC post-season berth.

Augsburg improves to 14-10 overall and 9-10 in the MIAC. Macalester drops to 2-21 on the season, 2-16 in the MIAC.

In addition to getting 24 points from Hamblett, the Scots received 14 from Peters and 11 from Justin Wasik (Fy., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South). The Scots shot 50% on the night (25-for-50) and went 8-for-19 on three-pointers.  Peters also handed out five assists.

Augsburg was paced by Quammen with 18 points, followed by Tyler Schmidt with 12 and Cory Polta with 10. The Auggies committed just five turnovers.

Macalester is back in action Wednesday (Feb. 16) at home against MIAC co-leader Carleton on Senior Night.
