Macalester gave defending NCAA Division III national champion St. Thomas a test for the first three-quarters of the game before the host-Tommies pulled away to beat the Scots 86-64. The No. 16-ranked Tommies move into sole possession of first place in the MIAC standings.
St. Thomas had a 36-34 halftime lead and led just 56-53 with 11:20 to go before staging a decisive 14-0 run. Macalester shot a season-high 54%, making 4-of-10 from three-point range, but could not overcome a 22-for-27 UST free throw shooting effort and +10 turnover advantage.
The Scots were led by
Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.), who continued his good play of late by going 9-for-14 from the floor and scoring 19 points.
Lamont Diggs (So., Fridley, Minn.) was 6-for-9 shooting and finished with 14 points and four assists.
Justin Wasik (So., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) chipped in with 10 points.
St. Thomas improves to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the MIAC. Macalester is 0-7 on the year, 0-4 in MIAC play.
The Tommies were led by John Nance with 15 points. Peter Leslie and Tommy Hannon each had 14 points and Leslie handed out five assists.
On Monday (Dec. 12), Macalester plays host to Caltech at 7 p.m.
