Macalester and St. Olaf battled for the full 40 minutes in a close game throughout, but Mac's bid for its first victory of the season fell one point short as the Oles held on for a 69-68 MIAC win in Northfield.
The Scots held a slight lead for most of this game, which came down to the very end. The lead was never greater than two points over the final five minutes. St. Olaf broke a 67-67 tied with a layup with :48 to play, but had to hold off the Scots in the final second.
Macalester had an offensive rebound which went out of bounds with 00.6 left and was fouled on the in-bound pass with 00.2 to go in regulation.
Sam Marshall (Jr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) made the first try but the second rolled off the rim as the Oles avoided overtime and hung on for the victory.
Macalester played its best game of the season, shooting a season-high 47% and getting double figures in scoring from four players.
Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) led the way with 20 points and Marshall also had a strong game, contributing 17 points and eight rebounds.
Peters and Marshall were joined in double figures by
Justin Wasik (Jr., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) and
Lamont Diggs (So., Fridley, Minn.). Wasik knocked down three treys and scored 13 points and Diggs added 10 points.
Hans Erickson (Fy., La Crosse, Wis. / Logan) made 4-of-6 shots and finished with eight points and four assists.
Mac's five starters all played 33 minutes or more and scored all the team's points.
Stu Neville paced St. Olaf with 22 points. Bobby Fong went over the 1,000-point career mark finished with 18 points. The Oles shot 51%.
St. Olaf improves to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. Macalester is 0-6 on the season, 0-3 in the conference. The game featured 15 lead changes and 10 ties.
The Scots take on defending national champion St. Thomas on Wednesday (Dec. 7) at UST.
