Box Score
Upset-minded Macalester led by 11 points on a couple occasions in the first half, but No. 2-ranked Chicago grabbed its first lead of the game late in the first half and pulled away to beat the Scots 81-59 at the University of Chicago Tip-Off Tournament championship game.
The Maroons return five starters from an NCAA Elite 8 team which went 25-4, but had troubles with the smaller, scrappy Mac team which led 10-2 in the early going and later 20-9. However, in the second half, Chicago shot 52%.
Holly Schiedermayer (Sr., Waupaca, Wis.) went 8-for-11 from the floor, 8-for-9 from the free throw stripe, and finished with a career-high 24 points. She also led the team with eight rebounds. Schiedermayer, who scored 14 points Friday in Mac's win over Benedictine (Ill.), was named to the five-member all-tournament team.
Kyanna Jones (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo) and
Jessica Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) each added nine points. Mac received three assists from
Shannon Rene (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial),
Maggie Wood (Sr., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) and
Kathryn Medinger (So., Sitka, Alaska).
Chicago's size helped give the Maroons a 48-20 lead in points in the paint. Taylor Simpson scored 15 of her team-high 23 points in the second half and went 8-for-11 from the field. Maggie Ely added 15 points.
The Scots are 1-1 and return to the court Tuesday (Nov. 22) at Northwestern-Roseville.
