Macalester vs. Gustavus statistics
Macalester played some solid basketball after a slow start, but traditional MIAC stronghold Gustavus Adolphus finished on top with an 83-73 at the Leonard Center. The Gusties went 9-for-21 from three-point range and move to 6-2 on the year, 4-0 in the MIAC.
Pierce Peters (So., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) went 10-for-16 from the floor, finishing with 24 points to lead the Scots. This was his fourth 20-point game of the season.
Justin Wasik (Fy., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) contributed 13 points and six rebounds.
Andy Bowman (So., Perry, Kan. / Perry – Lecompton) was solid in the post, scoring eight points and grabbing eight boards, and
Chris Quinn (Fy., Medford, Mass. / Beaver Country Day).
Phil Wirtjes scored 20 pionts, James Hill added 16, and Dan Schmidtknecht distributed 11 assists to lead Gustavus. The Gusties had a 16-9 turnover advantage.
Although the Scots fell behind 19-5, they trailed by just four points at the break, 39-35, getting eight points apiece from Wasik and Peters. The key run in the second half came when Gustavus extended a 47-42 lead to 16 points at 12:42 with a 15-4 rally.
The Scots shot 47% for the night and out-rebounded Gustavus 37-26.
Macalester plays a non-conference game Saturday (Dec. 11) at 7 p.m. at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and the country's No. 4-ranked team. [
