Bid for win at St. Thomas falls short

Macalester vs. St. Thomas statistics

Macalester began its 20-game MIAC schedule by giving host St. Thomas, the nation's No. 13-ranked team, all it could handle before falling 72-63 as the Tommies used a 20-8 run over the final 9:22 to counter an upset bid by the Scots

Pierce Peters (So., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) had 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for Macalester, which shot 49% from the floor and 78% from the foul line.  Kyle Hamblett (Sr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) added 18 points and six boards.  Justin Wasik (Fy., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) finished with 10 points and five of his team's 10 assists.

St. Thomas led 38-36 at halftime as each team shot 52%. The biggest lead for either team in the first period was five points. The game's second 20 minutes was also closely contested and with 5:59 to play, the Scots were on top 59-58 on a Peters free throw. That was Macalester's final lead, but the Scots were within three points at 66-63 with 1:22 left.

Tommy Hannon had 16 points, eight rebounds and five St. Thomas. The Tommies hit the boards for a +10 rebounding advantage and owned a 18-9 margin in second chance points.

Even though Macalester shot 49%, it went just 1-for-11 in three-point tries.

St. Thomas, starting its bid for a sixth straight MIAC crown, improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Mac falls to 0-4 overall, 0-1 in the MIAC.

The Scots go for their first win of the season Saturday (Dec. 4) when they host St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
