Peters has big game but Scots lose to Northwestern

The Scots received a big game from Pierce Peters (So., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area), who finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists, but it wasn't enough as visiting Northwestern-Roseville beat Macalester 74-68 at the Leonard Center. Peters was 10-for-17 from the field, including 4-for-5 on three-pointers.

Kyle Hamblett (Sr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) added 20 points and six rebounds to the Macalester cause.Chris Quinn (Fy., Medford, Mass. / Beaver Country Day) dished out five assists and Patrick Piepkorn (Jr., Sauk Rapids, Minn. / Sauk Rapids-Rice) grabbed eight boards.

Northwestern had four players in double figures, including Wade Whitwood with 19 points and Tom Gisler with 18. Gisler went 5-for-8 on three-point shots. The Eagles went 16-for-23 from the free throw line, compared to 7-for-11 for Mac, and enjoyed an 18-10 turnover advantage, leading to a 22-8 margin in points off turnovers.

The Eagles, defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference champions, are now 3-1, while the Scots drop to 0-3.

Northwestern led most of the contest, but the Scots kept within striking distance. The biggest Eagle lead came at 58-45 with 12:32 to play. That's when Mac began a 14-6 run to get to within five points at 64-59 with 5:03 left. Macalester trailed by four points, 69-65, with :53 to play, but could not get closer.

Macalester begins MIAC play next Wednesday (Dec. 1) at No. 13-ranked St. Thomas.
