McDonnell runs Scots past Maranatha 52-12 with 222 rushing yards

Jake McDonnell (Jr., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) ran 13 times for 222 yards and scored touchdowns from 25, five, and 62 yards out to lead Macalester (1-2) past Maranatha Baptist (0-3) 52-12 in Watertown, Wis.

Trevor Miehe (Jr., Holmen, Wis.) tossed three touchdown passes for the Scots and Nathan Coppersmith (So., Concord, Mass. / Concord Academy) set a school record with seven extra point conversions. Matt Mitchell (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) caught two Miehe touchdown passes.

This was McDonnell's third career 200-yard rushing performance. He also reached this milestone when he ran for 207 in 2006 and 257 in 2008, both against Crown.   McDonnell has 199 career carries for 1,314 yards (6.6 per attempts) and 16 touchdowns.

The Scots out-gained Maranatha by a commanding 517-186 advantage in total yardage on the day. Macalester moved the chains for 20 first downs and completed an efficient 11-of-14 passes for 170 yards. The team scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and added a TD and a field goal in the fourth.

Defensively, the Scots were equally dominant, holding Maranatha to 186 yards on the day. David Melms(Fy., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) and Aaron Gallegos (Fy., Lakeville, Minn. / North) each picked off passes, and Macalester's top tackler was Adam Bunkoske (Fy., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) with seven stops.

Mitchell's touchdown receptions came from 29 yards out (to start the scoring) and 17 yards, while Miehe also connected with Jon Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) on a 64-yard play.

In the fourth quarter, Mac's Geo Chester (Fy., Cass Lake, Minn. / Cass Lake-Bena) ran it across the goal line from a yard out, while Nathaniel Miller (So., Concord, Mass. / Phillips Academy) capped the scoring with a 24-yard field goal.  Chester gained 52 yards on 17 carries.

After two games on the road, the Scots return to Macalester Stadium next Saturday (Sept. 26) at 1 p.m.
