Comeback try comes up short at St. John’s

Macalester staged a second half comeback to pull to within five points with 4:44 to play after trailing by as many as 18 earlier in the period, but St. John's closed out the game on a 15-3 run to defeat the Scots 71-54 in Collegeville.

The Johnnies improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in MIAC play. Macalester is now 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.

Pierce Peters (Fy., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) led the way for the Scots, finishing with season-high totals of 15 points and eight rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Jerry Kraus (Sr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral – Colo.) with 12 points. Dishing out three assists each were Paul Richie (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Kyle Hamblett (Jr., Paris, France / American School of Paris). The Scots made their come-from-behind attempt on a 50% shooting figure in the second half.

St. John's knocked down 8-of-16 from behind the three-point stripe and shot 51% for the game, and enjoyed a 36-20 margin in points in the paint. SJU led 31-19 at halftime. The Johnnies made their first four shots of the game, all three-pointers. Four Johnnies reached double figures in scoring, led by Andy Burns with 14 points to go along with six assists and three steals. Aaron Barmore pulled down 10 rebounds.

Macalester plays a non-conference game next Monday (Dec. 14) against Martin Luther at 7:30 p.m.
