Scots get MIAC campaign off to winning start

Macalester vs. St. Mary's statistics

Macalester pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and had four players in double figures in scoring in a 61-48 win over St. Mary's in Winona in the first of 22 MIAC games this winter for the Scots.

After three narrow non-conference defeats to start the season, Macalester avoided another close contest by jumping out on top 23-10 after 17 minutes and holding SMU to a 26% first half shooting performance.

Mac is now 1-3 on the year, 1-0 in the MIAC. St. Mary's is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Two-time All-MIAC forward Trina PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) netted a game-high 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her 17th career double-double.

Adding 11 points apiece were Danielle Johnson (Sr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood), Jessica Rene (So., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) and Ann Baltzer (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.). Johnson handed out four assists and Baltzer grabbed seven boards.

Cherie Kulig and Jess Miller each scored 11 points to pace the Cardinals. Klug dished out five assists.

The Scots out-scored St. Mary's 15-5 in second chance points and 19-5 in points off turnovers.

Macalester plays Saturday (Dec. 5) at Hamline at 1 p.m.
