Concordia-Moorhead shot 59% in the first 20 minutes to take a commanding 41-21 halftime lead, and went on to gain a 68-51 victory over the Scots at the Leonard Center. Concordia's John Fraase scored all of his game-high 21 points in the decisive first half and finished the contest with 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double in a row.
Macalester's second half offensive and defensive performance was the team's best since the team returned from the holiday break, and the Scots out-scored their guests by three points in the stanza.
Three Scots reached double figures in scoring, led by
Colin Keeley (So., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) with 12 points. Adding 10 points each were
Kyle Hamblett (So., Paris, France / American School of Paris) and
Paul Richie (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.).
Richie led a solid Mac defensive effort with a career-best eight steals. Richie's eight thefts helped the Scots gain a 21-15 turnover advantage. He accounted for eight of his team's 10 steals.
Jerry Kraus (Jr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral (Colo.)) led all Macalester rebounders with six boards.
Most of the game's statistical categories were even, other than the 52% to 34% shooting advantage for Concordia. The Cobs also enjoyed a 32-20 lead in points in the paint. There were only five second-chance points in the game.
Mac's next two games are on the road. The Scots play Saturday (Jan. 10) at Augsburg and next Wednesday (Jan. 14) at St. Olaf.
