Slow start leads to loss to Bethel

Bethel stormed to a 26-7 lead after 12 minutes of play and cruised to a 64-48 win over the Scots at the Leonard Center. The Royals out-rebounded Macalester 45-28 as the Scots drop their fifth game in a row. Bethel improves to 8-9 overall and 7-7 in the MIAC, while Macalester is now 8-9 on the season, 6-8 in MIAC competition.

After shooting just 23% in the first 20 minutes, Macalester made 50% of its shots in the second half, including 5-of-9 on three-pointers, but could get no closer than 14 points in the period.

Ann Baltzer (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) paced Mac with 10 points. Jessica Rene (Fy., Eau Claire, Wis. / Memorial) added nine points, while Danielle Johnson (Jr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) and Majra Mucic (So., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.)) each tallied eight points.

Four Royals reached double figures in scoring, led by Lakita Davis with 15 points on a 6-for-8 shooting effort. Taylor Sheley added 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Macalester looks to snap its five-game slump Saturday (Jan. 31) when it hosts St. Thomas at 1 p.m.

Saturday is Toys for Teens Day, sponsored by Mac's Student-Athletic Advisory Council. Attendees are encouraged to make a donation of canned goods or cash. Those making a donation will be entered into a halftime drawing for assorted prizes. The two drawings will be held at halftime of each game. All donations will go to Second Harvest Food Shelf.
