Macalester denied by Oles 76-70

Macalester vs. St. Olaf statistics

Macalester led for most of the way and had a 10-point lead with just over seven minutes to play, but was denied its first win of the season as St. Olaf rallied for a 76-70 victory in Northfield. Trailing 62-52 after the Scots gained their final double-digit lead, St. Olaf scored 13 points in a row to take the lead for good at 65-62 with 4:06 to play.

St. Olaf knocked down 26-of-34 free throw shots and received 42 points from its bench. Shooting, rebounding and turnover statistics were even for the game, but Macalester could not overcome a 26-10 disadvantage in foul shots made.

Four Scots reached double figures in scoring, led by Kyle Hamblett (So., Paris, France / American School of Paris) with 17 points and Colin Keeley (So., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) with 15. Paul Richie (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) each scored 11. Hamblett was 6-for-11 from the floor and Murrey went 5-for-9.

Bobby Fong pumped in 17 points to pace St. Olaf. Alfred Jaryan converted 14-of-16 free throw chances and finished with 17 points. Jayran also handed out four assists.

St. Olaf is now 6-7 this winter and 3-5 in the MIAC. Macalester is 0-14 overall, 0-9 in the conference.

Macalester plays host to third-place Carleton this Saturday (Jan. 17) at 3 p.m.
