Bethel pulls away in second half

Bethel out-scored Macalester 47-24 in the second half and beat the Scots 88-68 at the College of St. Catherine in the season's next-to-last contest. Bethel shot 63% in the second half.

The Royals keep their MIAC playoff hopes alive and improve to 14-10 overall, 10-9 in the MIAC. Macalester goes to 6-18 on the year and 4-15 in MIAC play.

Macalester enjoyed a 19-10 turnover advantage, but Bethel battled the boards for a 45-26 rebounding margin.

Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) scored 23 of his game-high 30 points in the first half to pace the Scots. This was his third 30-point effort of the season (Conboy has also netted 29 points three times).  Ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III in scoring, Conboy has reached double digits in 40 straight games and in 96 of 100 career starts.  With 1,887 career points, he needs 13 in the season-finale to become the 12th player in MIAC history to reach the 1,900 level.

Mike Moberg had 21 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Royals. Nike Otterson added 14 points, while Tyler Brown and Tim Madson each tallied 11 points. The Royals shot 52% on the night and went 8-for-19 on three-pointers.

The game was closely played until Bethel turned a 61-58 lead with 12:33 to play into a 21-point advantage by out-scoring the Scots 21-3 over the next nine minutes.

Macalester closes out its season Saturday (Feb. 23) against Hamline at the University of St. Thomas at 7 p.m.

On Saturday night, Macalester's Student-Athlete Advistory Council (SAAC) is once sponsoring its annual “Hoops for Hunger” Night.  Attendees are encouraged to make a donations of canned goods or cash.  Those making a donation will be entered into a halftime drawing for two $50 Target gift cards.  The two drawings will be held at halftime of each game of the doubleheader. All donations will go to Second Harvest food shelf.
