Johnnies jump to quick start and defeat Mac 82-69

Macalester vs. St. John's stats & play-by-play

St. John's ran out to a 28-10 lead, held off a brief Macalester comeback attempt early in the second half, and went on to gain an 82-69 win at the College of St. Catherine over the Scots. Four players reached double figures for the Johnnies.

With the win, the Johnnies go to 13-10 on the season, 10-8 in the MIAC. Macalester is now 6-16 overall and 4-13 in the conference.

Four Scots reached double figures in scoring, led by Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) with 18 points and 14 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and 35th of his career. Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) also had a solid game, finishing with 15 points and seven assists.

Woldeslassie and Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) each went 4-for-8 on three-point shots. Both are ranked in the top three in the league in three-pointers.  Ranwick and Kyle Hamblett (Fy., Paris, France / American School of Paris) finished with 12 points apiece.

Ryan Lieser had 18 points for St. John's and late in the first half became the 31st player in the history of the program to reach the 1,000-point plateau in career scoring. Lieser also collected four assists and three steals. Brady Brink contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, while Nick Johnson had 11 points and eight assists. Chris Schwartz also reached double figures with 12 points.

Macalester did a good job keeping the MIAC's top-ranked rebounding team off the boards most of the night, but was out-scored 52-22 in points-in-the-paint.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Feb. 16) at Carleton.
