New year starts with loss to Concordia

Macalester returned to the court for the first time since the middle of last month and lost to the Concordia Cobbers 74-62 in Moorhead . The Cobbers closed out the first half on an 11-2 run after the first 15 minutes of play was closely contested, and held a double-digit lead throughout most of the second half.

The Scots go to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers are 4-4 on the season, 3-2 in MIAC play.

Both teams shot 45%, but Concordia knocked down seven three-pointers and battled the boards for 15 offensive rebounds, helping the hosts enjoy an 11-2 advantage in second chance points.

Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) paced the Scots with 22 points, her second-best single-game career total at Mac. She was 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Ann Baltzer (So., Bismarck, N.D.) posted her third consecutive double-double and fifth of the season, finishing with 15 points on a 7-for-9 shooting performance and 13 rebounds.

Danielle Johnson (So., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) finished with nine points and six assists.

Four players reached double figures for the Cobs, led by Melanie Hageman with 19 points. Maggie Bauernfeind and Kaitlynn Gottenborg added 14 apiece. Jenna Freudenberg handed out five assists and Sara Sorbo collected five steals.

Macalester plays host to Augsburg on Monday (Jan. 7) at the College of St. Catherine at 5:45 p.m. After that, seven on the team's next nine games are on the road.
