Five reach double figures; but Scots lose at Bethel

Macalester vs. Bethel stats & play-by-play

Macalester fought back from a 12-point second half deficit to make a game of it, but came up in an 83-79 setback to Bethel in Arden Hills. The Scots, who have followed a five-game winning streak with a game-game slide, had five players reach double figures in what was by far their most balanced game of the season.

The Scots drop to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC, while the Royals improve to 8-5 overall, 4-4 in the MIAC.

Mac shot well (50% compared to 42% for Bethel), but the Royals had three players reach double digits in rebounding and out-boarded their guests 47-36 and had 16 second-chance points.

MIAC scoring leader Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) missed the 20-point mark for the first time since the season's third game, but finished 18 points and 18 rebounds. Conboy, who had 19 boards a week earlier against St. John's, moves past the 700-rebound mark his career and with 711 needs just 12 to become the school's all-time rebounding leader. He has ripped down 50 boards in the team's past three games.

Joining Conboy in double figures were

Kyle Hamblett
(Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) with 13, Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) with 11 and Jerry Kraus (So., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral (Colo.)) with 10. Kyle Hamblett (Fr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) also had a solid all-around game, contributing nine points, four rebounds, four blocked shots and three assists from his guard position.

Tim Madson paced Bethel with 25 points and Mike Moberg added 20 points and 11 rebounds. Cory Laugen had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Madson also dished out six assists.

On Saturday (Jan. 19), Macalester plays host to Carleton at 3 p.m. at the College of St. Catherine.
