St. Mary's gets past Macalester 3-1 in Winona

Macalester won game one but host-St. Mary's came back to beat the Scots 3-1. The Cardinals improve to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC. Mac drops to 2-8 on the season, 0-2 in league play.

Game scores were 28-30, 30-22, 30-19 and 30-26. SMU spiked 70 kills, compared to 43 for the visitors. Alex Nold had 23 kills to lead the Cards, while Jessica Mate added 18.

Suzy Szumowski (Jr., Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) and Marie Godwin (So., Chaska, Minn.) provided eight kills apiece to lead the Macalester offense. Szumowski added 10 blocks and Godwin also had 13 digs. Szumowski's 10 blocks is a career-high, passing her previous high of eight set earlier this season in a win over Northland.

Kari Tanaka (Sr., Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) dished out 21 assists. Briana Keefe-Oates (Sr., Encinitas, Calif. / San Dieguito Academy) added 15 assists. Three Scots added six kills apiece in their balanced hitting attack: Tanaka, Majra Mucic (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Kate Fahje (Sr., Waukesha, Wis. / South).

Rachel Monterastelli contributed 60 assists for the Cardinals and Theresa Perrini had 27 digs.

The Scots return to MIAC action Saturday (Sept. 22) against defending conference champion Concordia in Moorhead. The Cobbers are currently rated No. 11 in the NCAA Division III ranks.
