Carleton Spoils Macalester's MIAC Opener

Carleton beat Macalester for the second year in a row as the Knights toppled the Scots 3-1 in Northfield in the MIAC opener for both teams. The Scots are handed their first setback of the year, and go to 2-1-2 overall and 0-1 in the league, while Carleton goes to 4-1 on the season, 1-0 in MIAC play.

Bobby Phillips, one of the MIAC's best players, scored all three Carleton goals, the final on a penalty kick in the 77th minute to bury the Scots. Phillips scored goals three minutes into the first half and again three minutes into the second half as the Knights took a 2-0 lead.

Macalester responded with a Nate Van Wylen (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) goal at 59:30 on a Carson Gorecki (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) assist. For Van Wylen, it was his second goal of the year. Gorecki has scored or assisted on seven of his team's nine goals through five games.

The Scots earned nine corner kicks but could not convert any of them into goals. Carleton out-shot Macalester 13-9.

Macalester travels to Wilmington, Ohio, to play a pair of games this weekend at Wilmington College. The Scots play Saturday (Sept. 15) against Denison (Ohio) and Sunday (Sept. 16) against Olivet (Mich.). Then it's back to MIAC play for the Scots, who host St. Olaf next Friday (Sept. 21).
