Grace King (Jr., Northampton, Mass.) scored her third and fourth goals of the season to lead Macalester to an important 2-0 victory over visiting Carleton in the MIAC opener for both teams.
The Scots avenge a pair of defeats to the Knights a year ago. Late in the '06 season, Carleton beat Macalester twice by 1-0 scores, the first one ending Mac's 43-game unbeaten streak and 39-game unbeaten streak against MIAC opponents. CC's regular-season win over Macalester last year cost the Scots their third straight conference championship.
Macalester and Carleton were picked first and second, respectively, in the MIAC pre-season coaches' poll and the winner of this game - Macalester - gets off to a good start in the race for the league title.
King headed in a free kick off the foot of Maddie Mette (So., Burnsville, Minn.) at 18:59 to put the home team in front 1-0. Then, midway through the second half, at the 63:48 mark, King stole a CC pass and beat the goalkeeper for her second score of the game.
Carleton out-shot Mac 8-6 and had a 5-3 corner kick margin. Macalester goalkeeper Jenny Lee (Jr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) had a strong game and registered four saves on the night.
The Scots are now 2-1 overall and Carleton is 3-1. Mac tries to go to 2-0 in the league when it plays Saturday (Sept. 15) at St. Catherine.
