Macalester vs. St. Mary's stats & play-by-play
Macalester picked up its first MIAC victory of the season when it held St. Mary's to no baskets and just four free throws over the first 10 minutes of the second half and went on beat the Cardinals 58-45 at the College of St. Catherine . The Scots improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. St. Mary's drops to 0-5 and 0-3 in the MIAC.
St. Mary's didn't score its first second half basketball until the 9:15 mark and by that time Mac's lead had increased to double digits. Macalester expanded the lead to 16 points at 48-32 with 7:11 to play was never threatened. Macalester's defensive effort held SMU to a 27% shooting figure (15-for-55), including 17% in the second half.
Trina PaStarr (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) contributed 21 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals to lead Macalester. She was 9-for-14 from the field. Majra Mucic (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds.
Eartha Bell (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck School) led the defensive charge with eight steals, boosting her season average to 5.6 thefts per game, while Alyssa Lunde (So., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) had a solid game, finishing with nine points and seven boards. Bell 's eight steals is the most for a Scot since Candace Martin also picked up eight in Dec. '01 against Bethel .
Kelly Tanke paced St. Mary's with 11 points. Jessica Weisbrod had nine points and nine rebounds. While St. Mary's shot just 27% from the field, the Scots shot 47%.
The Scots play another MIAC game at CSC's Butler Center when they host St. Thomas on Wednesday (Dec. 5) at 5:45 p.m.
