Macalester vs. St. Catherine stats & play-by-play
Macalester overcame a slow shooting start to make a game of it, staging an 18-4 run beginning midway through the second half to turn a 14-point deficit into a 41-41 tie, but host-St. Catherine out-scored the Scots 18-10 over the final 5:32 to walk away with a 59-51 victory. St. Kate's improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while Mac goes to 1-3 on the season, 0-2 in the league.
The Wildcats led by a defensive-minded 23-18 halftime score as the two teams combined to shoot just 28 percent from the floor (16-for-58, including 2-for-15 on threes). Macalester shot 48% in the second period, but a 14-for-15 CSC free throw shooting effort in the half kept the Wildcats in control.
Ann Baltzer (So., Bismarck, N.D.) posted her second double-double of the campaign and sixth in 16 career starts, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace Macalester.
Danielle Johnson (So., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) added 16 points and four assists. Eartha Bell (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck School) had a solid all-around game, contributing eight rebounds, six steals and three assists. Alyssa Lunde (So., Rochester, Minn. / Mayo) had nine points.
Rachel Berglund scored 20 points and Ashley Bush added 13 points and five assists to lead the way for St. Catherine. Emily Wigfield grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.
The Scots host MIAC doubleheaders at the College of St. Catherine Monday (Dec. 3) and Wednesday (Dec. 5). They take on St. Mary's on Monday and St. Thomas Wednesday
