Conboy scores 34 and Woldeslassie adds 33 as Scots beat Gustavus

Macalester's MIAC season got off to a winning start as the Scots battled back from a 12-point deficit midway through the second half to beat Gustavus Adolphus 82-78 in St. Peter.

The all-conference pair of Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn / Minnetonka) and Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) each pumped in over 30 points and accounted for 67 of their team's 82 points (82%) to lead the way. Conboy finished with 34 points and Woldeslassie finished with 33.

Behind 68-56, the Scots out-scored their hosts 26-10 over the final 8:43. Macalester shot a red-hot 57% from the field, including 47% on three-pointers (8-for-17), while Conboy and Woldeslassie combined to make 68% of their shots (23-for-34). Macalester made 15 of its 20 second half shots, including five of their seven tries from behind the arc.

Conboy was 4-for-4 on three-pointers and led the team with eight rebounds. Woldeslassie also handed out four assists. Through five games, Conboy is averaging 25.0 points and 10.6 rebounds.

Conboy and Woldeslassie each posted career highs in scoring. Conboy's previous best was 29 in the opener against UW-River Falls and the previous best for Woldeslassie was 32 last season against Augsburg.

Gustavus used an 18-5 first half run to go up by 14 points at 38-24 with 3:34 left in the first half. The Scots got off to a quick second half start to make things close again before the Gusties tallied 13 unanswered points to go back up by 12.

The Gusties netted their final basket to tie the score at 78-78 with 2:55 to play, but could not score the rest of the way.

Four players reached double figures in scoring for Gustavus, led by Trevor Wittwer with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds. Gustavus out-scored Mac 18-2 in second chance points, 48-34 in points-in-the-paint, and 31-6 in bench points.

Macalester returns to action with MIAC games next week at its '07-08 home facility, the Butler Center at the College of St. Catherine . The Scots host St. Mary's on Monday (Dec. 3) and St. Thomas on Wednesday (Dec. 5).
