Macalester vs. Concordia stats & play-by-play
Concordia University jumped to a 42-18 halftime lead by holding the Scots to a 24% shooting figure in the period and went to beat Macalester 80-65 at the Wildwood Lodge Classic at Concordia-St. Paul. The host-Bears received 27 points from Craig Heiman and move to 2-0 on the young season. Macalester is 0-2 heading into a pair of games next weekend in southern California.
Between the 16:28 and 6:39 marks of the second half, the Scots out-scored the Bears 31-12 to get back into the contest. At this point CSP led by just five points at 62-57. Macalester, however, could get no closer against the Division II Bears, who out-scored their guests 18-8 from that point on.
Neither team shot well from three-point territory. Both teams made most of their free throws. Turnovers were fairly even. The big difference was a 14-5 CU advantage on the offensive glass and 46-16 advantage in points-in-the-paint as the Bears controlled the inside.
Tom Conboy (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka), Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) and Brian Ranwick (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Minnetonka) accounted for 82% of Macalester's scoring and all but 11 of its shots. Conboy finished with 21 points to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Woldeslassie had 17 points and five assists, and Ranwick finished with 15 points. This was the 30th time in his career that Conboy has scored 20 points or more.
In addition to getting 27 points from Heiman, the Bears received 20 points and six assists from Matt Cadwell and 11 points and 14 rebounds from Chuol Chany.
The Scots play Friday (Nov. 23) against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and the following day against Pomona-Pitzer. Both games against these Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams begin at 5 p.m. pacific time. The game with CMS will be played at Pomona-Pitzer and the contest with PP will be played on the CMS floor.
Macalester then begins MIAC play the following week (Nov. 28) at Gustavus.
