Macalester vs. UWRF stats & play-by-play
Tom Conboy (Sr., Plymouthh, Minn. / Minnetonka) pumped in a career-high 29 points but Macalester dropped its season-opener to Wisconsin-River Falls 75-69 at the Wildwood Lodge Classic at Concordia University in St. Paul.
The Scots knocked down 8-of-11 from three-point range in the first half to take a 44-39 halftime lead. Macalester led 62-60 with 7:44 to play, but UW-River Falls out-scored the Scots 15-7 the rest of the way to escape with the win. The Falcons led by seven points at 71-64 with just under two minutes left. Mac, however, responded with a Conboy basket and three-pointer to cut the margin to just two with :46 remaining.
UWRF's Dijon Reese then made four of six from the foul line to seal the victory.
The game was close throughout and featured 18 lead changes and five ties.
Conboy went 11-for-22 from the floor and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while also collecting a game-high 11 rebounds. His 29-point effort surpasses his previous single-game high of 28 tallied at Gustavus as a freshman. Conboy now needs just two points to become to become the fourth player in the history of the program to reach 1,400 career points.
Abe Woldeslassie (Sr., Richfield, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy) added 14 points and handed out seven assists. Paul Richie (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) knocked down three treys in the first half and finished with nine points. In his first collegiate start, Jerry Kraus (So., Shenzhen, China / Chaparral (Colo.)) pulled down nine boards and dished out five assists.
Kelly Scott and Jontae Koonkaew scored 14 points apiece to lead four players in double figures for the Falcons. Kelly also grabbed nine rebounds. River Falls was well balanced as seven player scored between seven and 14 points.
UWRF enjoyed a 15-10 turnover advantage and out-scored Mac 17-9 in points off turnovers. After making 8-of-11 threes in the first half, Macalester nailed just 1-of-9 in the second half.
The Scots play tomorrow (Nov. 17) at Concordia at 8 p.m. against the Concordia Bears.
