Palmer's 13 saves lead Scots to shutout win over Bethel

Goalkeeper Ryan Palmer (Sr., Helena, Mont. / Capital) made 13 saves on the day and registered his second shutout of the season to lead Macalester to a 1-0 road win at Bethel as the Scots even their MIAC mark on the season at 2-2. The Scots move over the .500 mark overall at 5-4-3. Bethel drops to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Even though there was just one goal, there were plenty of opportunities for both teams. There were 43 shots in the match, 23 for Mac and 20 for BU, and the game featured 14 corner kicks. The Royals split goalkeeping duties and each recorded five saves.

The game's only goal came at 31:55 by Macalester's Scott Petesch (So., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson). Earlier in the week in a 2-1 loss to Wartburg, Petesch netted his first career goal when he blasted a free kick off an opponent's head and into the goal. Today at Bethel , his second Macalester goal was also deflected off the head of an opponent. Petesch, who had only played in four career varsity games before Sunday's match with Wartburg, now has produced the only two goals Mac has tallied in its past four games.

The Scots matched their season-high for shots on goal with 11, getting three from Jake Rocke (So., Lincoln, Neb. / East) and two by Carson Gorecki (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.). For total shots, Jeff Swick (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Adric Mueller (Sr., Madison, Wis.) led the way four apiece.

Macalester returns to MIAC competition Saturday (Oct. 6) when it plays host to St. John's at 7:30 p.m.
