In a match between a pair of teams fighting to get into the MIAC post-season playoffs, the visiting Macalester Scots and St. Thomas played to a 1-1 draw in wet and rainy conditions Tuesday afternoon. Macalester goes to 8-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the MIAC. St. Thomas is now 9-5-1 on the year, 4-4-1 in MIAC competition.
As is stands now, Concordia (7-0-1) and St. Benedict (7-1) are most likely to get into the four-team MIAC playoffs. Macalester (5-3-1) is in a down-to-the-wire fight with Carleton (5-3) and Augsburg (5-3-1). St. Thomas (4-4-1) still has an outside chance. Macalester's remaining MIAC tilts are Thursday (Oct. 18) at home against Hamline and Oct. 24) at home against Gustavus. Two wins does not guarantee a spot as the Scots must also hope Carleton and/or Augsburg lose or at least tie.
St. Thomas got on the board first on a Caitlin O'Brien goal at 30:30.
With the second half clock getting dangerously close to winding down, the Scots saved their post-season chances when Meghan Garrity (Sr., Walled Lake, Mich. / Marian) found Lauryn Gutierrez (Fy., Hickory N.C. / St. Stephen's) on a cross, with Gutierrez beating the UST keeper at 78:02 for her first collegiate goal.
Mac out-shot the Tommies 16-12 and had an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Macalester goalkeeper Jenny Lee (Jr., Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial) turned away four UST shots on goal.
The Scots host Hamline on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 7:45 p.m.
